Carbohydrate from starch rather than sugar — rice, grains, pulses.
Not all carbohydrate is alike: sugar and rice look similar on a nutrition table and mean quite different things in a diet. A product qualifies only when carbohydrate supplies at least half its energy, sugars are no more than a fifth of that carbohydrate, fat stays under 30 % of energy, and salt under 1 g per 100 g. We also exclude what a nutrition table cannot tell apart: alcohol, sweets, fried snacks, chewing gum and seasonings. What is left is rice, grains, pasta, pulses and bread. Products with the smallest sugar share come first, and among equals the cheapest.
